About the role

We are seeking a Senior Grid Connection Engineer to be based in Melbourne with proven connection experience, strong stakeholder engagement skills with AEMO/NSP, and a solid technical understanding of the NER/WEM rules.
Key responsibilities

  • Lead/manage the grid connection process in all project phases – i.e. R1 to post R2 including business development, engineering design, development, construction, commissioning, and commercial operation.
  • Conduct and provide technical support for various renewable energy sites including:


    • Preliminary analysis of grid data to assess connection locations. o Identification of grid opportunities within the National/Western Electricity Market.
    • Liaison with AEMO, network service providers, OEMs and technical consultants throughout the grid connection process.
    • Manage PSSE and PSCAD models, grid connection studies and GPS packages.
    • Assist the asset management team with technical grid connection issues including registration support, loss factor analysis, and assessment of market rule change impacts.
    • Provide design inputs to grid connection, substation, and collector network aspects of projects.


  • Liaise with business development managers, projects directors, operation manager and other key internal stakeholders to develop project on schedules and in budget.
  • Support Development activities including preparation of tenders, providing input to financial models, and travel to attend meetings and conferences as required.
  • Participate in the preparation of technical tender documentation (leading grid connection aspects) for the assignment of construction contracts and suppliers.
  • Support the review of power systems studies, including grid connection, system strength impact assessments and research and development.
  • Liaise with technical team and provide insights on undertaking EMT and RMS based simulations using PSCAD, PSSE and DigSILENT-PowerFactory.
  • Continually learn new technical skills and keep up to date with market and industry technology, to deliver the responsibilities of the role.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong understanding of the National Electricity Market, Western Electricity Market and the transmission system that underpins its operations.
  • Experience in the connection of projects to the NEM/WEM through the AEMO connection process.
  • Capability to assess changes and identify opportunities within the NEM/WEM.
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory framework imposed by the NER/WEM rules.
  • Experience in connection application, generator registration, and negotiation of generator performance standards.
  • Experience in commissioning generating assets including Hold Point testing.
  • Prior grid connection engineering experience on the NEM/WEM.
  • Generator and power systems modelling experience using PSS/E and/or PSCAD and/or Power Factory.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.


  • Qualifications in Engineering (Electrical/Power System/Control). Post-graduate degrees are highly valued.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience.
