United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.

They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Today, the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides substantive support and capacity-building for the SDGs and their related thematic issues, including:

DSDG plays a key role in the evaluation of UN systemwide implementation of the 2030 Agenda and on advocacy and outreach activities relating to the SDGs.

In order to make the 2030 Agenda a reality, broad ownership of the SDGs must translate into a strong commitment by all stakeholders to implement the global goals. DSDG aims to help facilitate this engagement.

Our commitment to the SDGs

We take the progression of the Sustainable Development Goals seriously. It’s a plan that allows anyone to understand where the focus point needs to be in order to end poverty and reduce inequality, amongst a range of other goals.

Whilst we’re not in a position to impact all of the individual goals we’ve chosen eight where we think we can make a difference through our personal and professional actions.

Things we’ve done to make a difference

Here’s what we’re doing to contribute to the UNGC’s goals. We’re proud of what we have done but you’ll see that we haven’t progressed on every goal. We don’t see this as a failure – we’re transparent with what we’re achieving and where our current focus is. We do this to remain accountable to our shared vision with the UNGC.

Gender Equality

Talesca’s current workforce is 60% female and we run a hybrid system to allow for a flexible model that fits in with the realities of having a family.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Within our business we only use eco-friendly cleaning products and recycled toilet paper (we love Who Gives a Crap). They’re small things but we’re seeing our staff adopt these changes too.

Affordable Clean Energy

We only use clean energy providers within the business. We offset all of our carbon emissions and we’re the ones who make sure the last person in the office turns off the lights and the TV. Small things that make a big difference when adopted on a global scale.

One of our most recent Talesca Action days centred around gathering city-based waste and ensuring green spaces were cleaned and as much waste as possible was recycled.

Plastics are a huge issue when it comes to the ocean. We ensure we never use single use plastics and every single can or bottle we can find goes into a COEX recycling bin and contribute to Queensland’s recycling recovery goals of 85% of eligible containers.
